 | | Canada - Halifax NS: Corvette HMCS Sackville, 2005 (33 images)
33 photos of HMCS Sackville, the only surviving World War 2 Flower class anti-submarine corvette. 269 of these rudimentary warships were built in Britain and Canada. Their crews were mainly inexperienced civilian reservists, who gave outstanding service in the Battle of the Atlantic. Ships and men are deservedly immortalised in the book and film 'The Cruel Sea.' Sackville is the Canadian Naval Memorial, and is preserved at Halifax, Nova Scotia, where I photographed her in October 2005. Her website is www.hmcssackville-cnmt.ns.ca/.

15 photos taken in June 2006 in the Deutsches Musuem, Munich, most of German submarine U1 - the first of a long and deadly line....U1 was built in 1906, the same year as the Royal Navy's revolutionary all big gun battleship HMS Dreadnought. U1 was relegated to training duties before the First World War, and afterwards was preserved, in sectioned form, entombed in the basement of the Deutsches Museum, about as far from the sea as it is possible to get in Germany. Also preserved is a Seehund (=Seal) two man midget submarine, built in 1944.

 | | Russia - St Petersburg: Cruiser Aurora, 2004 (9 images)
9 pictures taken in September 2004 of this ship, preserved in St Petersburg. Aurora has two claims to fame. In October 1917 she fired the starting signal for Lenin's coup d'etat. Preserved for her revolutionary associations, Aurora is now one of the very few warships to have survived from the early 20th century. She has a British counterpart in the 1914 light cruiser Caroline, which survives in Belfast, but is unfortunately not publicly accessible.
There is a good history of Aurora (in English) at www.museum.navy.ru/f1e.htm .
